‘tis The Season -- Or Is It?
By Judith Sherven, PhD & Jim Sniechowski, PhD
Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Chanukah, or Kwanza, whether you have plans for New Year’s Eve or not, this is the month for anxiety, self-doubt, and compulsive over-doing. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Not if you remember the deeper meaning of this time of year.

Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanza all revolve around community -- whether that community be religious or cultural. These traditions all celebrate the continuity of life and, at the same time, our capacity to create new life, new freedoms, new spiritual awareness, and understanding. And the celebration rituals for all three involve the fire and the illumination of candle light.

lighting of the holiday menorah, with its nine candles, is the center of the Chanukah celebration. The menorah holds nine candles and symbolizes the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple after the Maccabees drove the Syrians out of Israel. Also, there is the miracle of a oil lamp in the Temple, which, with almost no oil remaining, stayed lit for eight days.

Fundamental to a Kwanza celebration is the Kinara, which holds seven candles. The candles reflect the seven principles at the foundation of this African-American holiday time, which was begun in 1966 and is now celebrated by 15 million people worldwide. Spiritual values of responsibility, self-determination, reaffirmation, and creativity are at the heart of Kwanza.
Christmas candles remind us of the bright star that guided the three wise men to the birth place of Jesus. Originally Christmas tree lights were small candles, but with the invention of
electricity, the safer strings of “pretend” candle-light came into vogue. Christmas is celebrated as the birth date of Christianity, with its emphasis on love, peace, and goodwill to men.

Then New Year’s Eve -- and even more lights: the mirrored ball in Times’ Square; fireworks and candles at festive parties; and all the celebrations of new life and new opportunities in the new year!

With a commitment to stay in tune with these festivals of light, you yourself will become a light, lit from within by a determination not to give yourself away to “supposed to,” “should” or ”what would they think?” You will be alight with the freedom to meet the holidays in whatever ways you choose, all the while celebrating your new freedom and joy, self-responsibility, and inner peace.

Without the burden to shop ‘till you drop, the guilt of going into debt and the exhaustion of compulsive decorating, cooking, and partying, you will be able to show up at the events you choose to attend as a self-possessed radiance. There can be no greater gift you could give yourself and all those around you then to embody the very meaning of this time of year. You will influence all those around you to relax, enjoy the time together with loved ones, and even cut dreary Aunt Helen and Uncle Harold some slack for being the needy, lonely social misfits they’ve always been.

Shine bright! Cast a the glow that can only come from your determination to celebrate this time on your own terms, to express your new found inner freedom in all that you do. ‘Tis the season for you to shine with love for all those around you and practice self-love by opening to your own magnificence!
